Modular, scalable and compact

Built on the industry-standard PXI Express architecture, the Proteus Arbitrary Waveform Transceiver offers a modular design that scales easily to hundreds of channels while minimizing footprint. Its high-density form factor packs four generator outputs and two digitizer inputs into just three PXI slots. This makes Proteus a space-efficient and cost-effective solution for synchronized, phase-coherent applications such as EW simulation, large-scale qubit control, and massive MIMO research.

Ultra-fast data transfer

The Proteus architecture is optimized for maximum data throughput, leveraging a state-of-the-art PCIe backplane. Key capabilities include bidirectional waveform memory transfer, real-time signal generation using pulse descriptor words (PDWs), and uninterrupted streaming for playback and recording applications. Proteus’s high-speed data transfer architecture revolutionizes performance across Electronic Warfare, Communications, and Physics by removing traditional bandwidth and memory bottlenecks. For Electronic Warfare the continuous streaming of dense, non-repeating threat environments and real-time Pulse Descriptor Word (PDW) is essential for realistic scenario generation. This massive throughput supports the transmission of long, real-world data sequences required for rigorous wireless testing, while in physics and quantum computing, the system’s rapid waveform changing helps characterize QBits.

Real-time feedback control system

The Tabor Proteus real-time feedback system is important because it fundamentally shifts signal processing from a "pre-loaded" paradigm to a "responsive" one. By integrating the Arbitrary Waveform Generator (DAC) and the Digitizer (ADC) into a single FPGA-controlled unit, it eliminates the round-trip latency of sending data back to a PC for processing. In high-speed applications, the time it takes to measure a signal, process it, and generate a response is the critical bottleneck. The Proteus system reduces this latency, allowing for conditional waveform generation—meaning the system changes its output instantly based on what was received. This is a key feature for Closed-loop Electronic Warfare systems, or a Radar Target Generators, and Qbit control and reset.

Task driven non-linear waveform sequencing

Unlike traditional AWGs, its Task Table capability is a conditional state machine rather than a linear waveform sequencer. This allows the system to process incoming data via its integrated receiver and use real-time feedback to instantly jump between waveform segments, enabling intelligent, logic-based responses to changing conditions with minimal latency. In Radar Mode, this tight integration of Tx, Rx, and FPGA transforms the instrument into a responsive Radar Target Simulator (RTS) capable of DRFM-like functionality. The system can detect incoming pulses and immediately schedule coherent, modified echoes—such as Doppler-shifted or delayed signals—to simulate moving targets. Deterministic wavefrom sequencing, real-time feedback, and radar target generation capability are easily programmed using Python, Matlab, C or LabView.

In this video, we use the Proteus Arbitrary Waveform Transceiver to measure the length of a coax cable. We transmit 200MHz pulses of RF energy and measuring the delay through the cable. The delay is 0.068us , speed of light is 300,000,000 meters/s. Therefore the cable length is 20M. In the following videos we will demonstrate more advanced measurements - but let’s start at the beginning.

This tutorial shows how significant cost savings can be achieved by using digitizers (ADC) in multiple Nyquist zones. We use the Tabor Proteus P9082M Arbitrary Waveform Generator with an optional 5.4GS/s analog to digital converter, transforming the AWG into an Arbitrary Waveform Transceiver, (AWT).

We use the Lucid 12GHz RF Signal Generator (also available in 3GHz and 6GHz models) to generate tones up to 10GHz and show how to measure the signal and understand the trade-offs such as amplitude roll-off.

In this tutorial we show how significant cost and complexity savings can be achieved, by using RF DAC features such as Multiple Nyquist Zones, Interpolation and Digital-Up-Conversion (DUC).

We use the Proteus P9484M Arbitrary Waveform Generator (RF AWG), with 9GHz of analog bandwidth, enabling direct generation of RF or Microwave Signals using either multiple Nyquist zones or the built-in IQ modulator feature of the DUC. Note the frequency 3.6GHz, should be 3.2GHz

The recent advances in commercial-off-the-shelf high speed DAC and ADC technology, combined with the growth of fast instrument/computer interconnections such as those employed in PXIe, has enabled the creation of new instrument architectures.

In this talk we gave at IMS2021's Technical Talks, we perform a ‘tear down’ of the Tabor Proteus Arbitrary Waveform Transceiver and explore concepts such as direct to RF/Microwave Signal Generation and Analysis, multiple Nyquist Zone Operation, on-chip IQ modulation, and real-time data streaming.

In this presentation, you will learn about the new fully digital architecture for Vector Signal Generation and Analysis made possible by the latest generation of Arbitrary Waveform Transceivers (AWT). They can improve channel density and performance, simplify setup complication and enhance experiment efficiency.

Solution examples, based on the Tabor Proteus for multiple relevant application areas such as; MIMO, Phase-Array Radar, Automotive Testing and Quantum Computing will be shown, stressing the gains in terms of integration, cost per channel, and performance.

Using two channels simultaneously on the Proteus Arbitrary Waveform Transceiver, we again transmit 200MHz pulses of RF energy from CH1 and CH2. We then adjust in real-time the delay between each channel to emulate the angle of arrival, plus to emulate how a radar mode would behave we increase the PRI to emulate what would happen as it approaches the target.

Operating Quantum Computing requires the generation, capture, and analysis of highly accurate multiple modulated RF signals, in order to set up and read out the Quantum state of a single Qubit. Abstract:

The need for faster and faster data rates in cellular systems creates a number of design challenges for analog RF engineers, especial those designing amplifiers or transmitter output stages. The underlying dominant cellular transmission technology is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM), and while it has excellent multipath resilience, things become more problematic as you increase the throughput of the transmission. Wider bandwidths mean more modulated carriers and this will inevitably increase the peak to average ratio of the signal. High peak signals will cause intermodulation distortion, which then generates spectral regrowth, adjacent channel interference, and a deterioration of the EVM performance.

In this session we will talk about various amplifier stimulus signals that will help you get the most insight into how your amplifier is going to perform. Stating with fundamentals of a two-tone stimulus through to the use of multi-tones with various phase relationships that allow you to stress the amplifier deterministically. Then we will look at the OFDM signal and how different test signals for 4G, 5G, and WiFi are employed to create peak signals causing different types of spectral regrowth. We will also discuss how to reduce spectral regrowth with techniques such as waveform clipping and envelope tracking.

We’ll discuss some theory, some practical aspects and have a number of measurement demonstrations, using analog signal generators and arbitrary waveform generators. You will gain some great insights and come away with some solid techniques on how to make effective measurements and fully understand how to get the most performance out of your amplifier and output stage.

More experiments from the Tabor Lab. In this short video we put an antenna on a Teledyne Lecroy Oscilloscope and captured to 2.5GHz of instantaneous bandwidth and recorded it to a file. We then loaded the file into the Tabor Proteus P9082M arbitrary waveform generator and played it back. We’ve zoomed in on a specific WLAN carrier and you can see packets flying through the ether in the time domain while observing the time correlated RF spectrum.

In this demonstration we compare Analog IQ modulation to Digital IQ modulation. Advances in DAC technology now means that many chips support direct to RF capability, with built in Oscillators (Numerically Controlled) and IQ modulation capability. The new Proteus Arbitrary Waveform Generator from Tabor has this capability with a usable bandwidth up to 8GHz supported by multiple Nyquist zone operation. The tasks of balancing and nulling are no longer required using this approach, thus reducing setup time and maintenance of complex calibration tables and procedures.

The signals used in today’s most advanced communication technologies can employ various modulation and multiplexing techniques to optimize different parameters, such as spectral efficiency, susceptibility to interference, and data rate.

Correspondingly, these signals can have widely varying Peak-to-Average Power Ratios (PAPRs). Careful consideration must be taken with regard to PAPR. If it is too high, it can lead to spectral spreading or regrowth. However, lowering power can lead to less efficient operation of critical components like power amplifiers.
