Signal Integrity and Purity

The Lucid-X family establishes a new benchmark for spectral purity, delivering exceptionally low phase noise across a frequency range extending up to 40 GHz. Engineered to meet the rigorous demands of Local Oscillators, Intermodulation Distortion measurement systems, and high-performance DAC/ADC clocking, the LSX ensures signal integrity in critical applications. It boasts impressive phase noise specifications at a 10 kHz offset: -148 dBc/Hz at 100 MHz, -133 dBc/Hz at 1 GHz, and -114 dBc/Hz at 10 GHz. With harmonics at -50 dBc and non-harmonics at -90 dBc, the Lucid-X delivers the precision required for the most challenging RF and Microwave applications.

Fast Frequency Switching

The 10us frequency switching capability is a critical specification for the LSX. In manufacturing environments, rapid switching minimizes "dead time" during automated testing, significantly increasing throughput and lowering the cost of testing. It is also essential for simulating modern real-world environments—such as frequency-hopping radars, electronic warfare threats, and secure communication protocols like Bluetooth or military radios—where signals must change pulse-to-pulse to avoid detection or interference. Ultimately, fast switching allows engineers to perform fast measurements without compromising accuracy.

Analog and Pulse Modulation

What makes the Lucid-X family of signal generators stand out is its analog modulation capability. It is equipped with built-in AM, FM, PM, and Sweep modulation features, allowing for versatile signal simulation required in analog communication systems. Specifically, it offers Frequency Modulation (FM) with maximum deviations up to 10 MHz and rates up to 1 MHz, Amplitude Modulation (AM) with linear depth up to 90% and rates up to 100 kHz, and Phase Modulation (PM) with a peak deviation of 360 degrees. Additionally, the instrument supports outstanding Pulse Modulation with a high on/off ratio (typically 70dB) and extremely fast rise/fall times of less than 15 ns, ensuring precision for radar and electronic warfare applications.

Control and Programming

Designed for flexibility, Tabor’s Lucid-X utilizes industry-standard SCPI and VISA architecture to ensure seamless remote control across any interface. Whether connecting via LAN or USB, you can easily integrate the unit using Python, MATLAB, C#/C++, or NI tools like LabVIEW. For added convenience, the included virtual front panel provides an intuitive graphical interface for control locally or across your network.

The Lucid RF analog signal generators Series offers the most advanced features and industry leading performance in the most compact form factor. The series feature 3, 6 and 12 GHz single channel versions, fast switching speed, superior signal integrity and purity, all the necessary modulated signals for analog communication systems and built in SPI and micro-USB interface. For synchronized, phase coherent, multi-channel applications such as quantum physics and phased array antennas the Benchtop platform is an ideal, high performance and cost-effective solution. The Desktop platform offers all the functionality of a fully featured full-size RF analog signal generator in the smallest footprint module available on the market. Its small size enables using it as a desktop unit or easily scaling up to hundreds of channels, while keeping the required space to a minimum, let it be 3, 6, and 12 GHz, excellent signal quality and integrity and fast switching speeds.

This tutorial shows how significant cost savings can be achieved by using digitizers (ADC) in multiple Nyquist zones. We use the Tabor Proteus P9082M Arbitrary Waveform Generator with an optional 5.4GS/s analog to digital converter, transforming the AWG into an Arbitrary Waveform Transceiver, (AWT).

In this fun video, we created a ‘backyard’ measuring range. We demonstrate constructive and destructive wave interference, and how it is used for beam-forming applications – using the Lucid LS1294R rack mount multi-channel signal generator. Beam-forming allows you to electronically direct RF energy in a certain direction, by adjusting the phase and amplitude of each carrier wave, which ultimately improves the ‘signal to noise ratio’. The signals used in today’s most advanced communication technologies can employ various modulation and multiplexing techniques to optimize different parameters, such as spectral efficiency, susceptibility to interference, and data rate.

Correspondingly, these signals can have widely varying Peak-to-Average Power Ratios (PAPRs). Careful consideration must be taken with regard to PAPR. If it is too high, it can lead to spectral spreading or regrowth. However, lowering power can lead to less efficient operation of critical components like power amplifiers.

Radar systems STALO

Today we performed a successful integration of our new LSX modular signal generator as a Radar systems STALO. (Stable Local Oscillator) We pointed the bean at a water tower 20 miles away and initial checks were good! With integrated LAN control, excellent phase noise, 10us switching time and coherent frequency switching the LSX is becoming a logical choice for Radar systems.
